The government is reviewing 101 agreements signed with India during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina’s administration. Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad, Nurul Islam Moni, announced that decisions regarding these agreements would be made soon.
He made this statement at a press conference held at the Media Centre of the Parliament Building in the capital on Friday morning (September 11).
Nurul Islam Moni stated that the current government is moving away from various unethical agreements. He added that the core principle of the BNP government is “Bangladesh First.”
He alleged that the previous government had entered into several agreements that were against the national interest. Efforts are now being made to withdraw from these agreements and protect national interests.
The Chief Whip mentioned that arrangements had even been made at Chittagong Port for a friendly nation’s ship to be unloaded first if two ships, one from Bangladesh and one from a friendly nation, arrived simultaneously. He said that such matters, which conflict with the country’s interests, are under review.
He stated, “Friendship will be maintained only after our national interests are protected.” He also affirmed that the government would take all necessary steps to advance Bangladesh and make it self-reliant.
Meanwhile, Nurul Islam Moni expressed anger over India’s failure to invite Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to the BRICS summit. He stated that it was regrettable for the head of government of an independent nation like Bangladesh not to be invited.
The Chief Whip further informed the press conference that the current government has repaid a $2.05 billion loan left by the Sheikh Hasina government. He also claimed that the country currently has a reserve of 1.6 million tons of fertilizer.
Nurul Islam Moni also noted that there is no lack of sincerity on the government’s part to resolve the electricity and gas crisis.
