A boy is in critical condition after being bitten multiple times by what is believed to have been a large shark at an eastern suburbs beach on Sydney Harbour.

About 4.20pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to Nielsen Park in Vaucluse following reports of the boy being attacked near Shark Beach.

The boy, believed to be 13 years old, had been jumping off rocks and swimming with friends when he was bitten

He was rescued from the water by Marine Area Command officers, police said.

The officers applied two medical tourniquets to the boy’s leg wounds and provided first aid while he was taken aboard a police boat to nearby Rose Bay wharf.

Paramedics then treated the boy, who was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick.

Police said the boy’s injuries were believed to have been inflicted by a large shark, but the species was not known.

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance confirmed the boy was in a critical condition with injuries to both legs.

Mosman couple Genna Merrin and George Toussaint, who were at Rose Bay wharf when the boy arrived aboard the police boat, said the officers treating him were “covered in blood”.

A group of children was seen speaking with detectives at Shark Beach on Sunday evening.
