Masudur Rahman: Against the backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions worldwide, the extreme devastation of climate change, and the challenges of rapidly evolving technology, the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) is set to commence at the UN Headquarters in New York. Scheduled to begin on September 8, 2026, the session will be attended by heads of state and government from nearly 193 countries. The much-anticipated high-level General Debate will kick off on September 22.

Diplomatic sources indicate that the most crucial and central theme of this 81st session will be “the revitalization of multilateralism and collective resistance against artificial intelligence (AI) and climate risks.”

The 2026 session is expected to deliver a significant push on climate change mitigation. Following years of record global temperature increases and frequent natural disasters, this session will heavily emphasize fully operationalizing the ‘Loss and Damage’ fund for affected and underdeveloped nations. Countries vulnerable to climate change, including Bangladesh, will particularly strive to secure fair compensation from the developed world and legally binding commitments from world leaders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The unprecedented rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2026 has become a major concern for global economy and security. A significant portion of this General Assembly session will focus on finalizing a global legal framework or a “Global Digital Compact” to regulate AI, prevent cyber warfare, and curb the spread of misinformation. World leaders will endeavor to reach a consensus on how to use AI for human welfare while keeping cyberspace secure.

Resolving the Ukraine crisis, the prolonged tensions in the Middle East, and geopolitical instability in various regions of Africa are among the key agendas for this session. In the current fragile global situation, the demand for reforming the UN Security Council (UNSC) will be raised more forcefully to address questions about the UN’s effectiveness. Significant debates are expected regarding increasing permanent and non-permanent memberships and the rational use of ‘veto’ power.

This 81st session is highly significant for Bangladesh. According to established norms, Bangladesh has a strong candidacy from the Asia-Pacific region to be elected as the President of this session. If Bangladesh secures this presidency, it will elevate the country’s diplomatic image to unprecedented heights on the global stage. Furthermore, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government is expected to strongly present the issues of climate change and a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis to world leaders.

In his pre-session statement, the UN Secretary-General said, “We stand at a juncture where joint leadership, not division, can save the planet. The 81st session will not merely be a forum for discussion but an effective platform for overcoming crises.”

Billions of people worldwide are now looking towards this session in New York, where the trajectory of global politics for the coming days will be determined.
