Won Correspondent : Investigators handling the high-profile Jhalakathi case involving allegations of religious defamation and insults to Islam have informed the court that the investigation is progressing apace, although additional time is needed to finalize the inquiry. This was the submission made at the recent hearing of this case on 05 March 2026.
According to the sources connected to the investigation, several individuals named as the accused in the case have already been identified through ongoing examination of online activities and digital evidence. Investigators have requested extra time from the court in order to complete a comprehensive investigation report. This request was granted and the matter is now set for a further hearing on 24 May 2026 and the investigation report is due at the same hearing.

The case was originally filed on 04 January this year before the Jhalakathi Judicial Magistrate’s Court. Complainant Nazir Ahammad alleged that some of the writings published on an online platform intentionally presented Islam in an offensive, mocking, and objectionable manner, thereby hurting religious sentiments and causing criminal injury to the Muslims.

Following an initial cognizance hearing on 04 January this year, Senior Judicial Magistrate Nowrin Kabir gave cognizance to the complaint and ordered the Officer-in-Charge of the Detective Branch of Jhalakathi Police Station to conduct the requisite investigation and submit the relevant investigation report. Court officials confirmed that the case was filed under Sections 295, 295A, 298, and 34 of Penal Code (Bangladesh) 1860 (as amended) and registered as C.R.-03/2026.

The complaint names 19 accused individuals. Those listed include Md. Mosharrauf Hossain, Gazi Aftabun Nesa Riti, Samir Halder, Nurul Amin, Md. Tanvir Hossain, Sabbir Ahmed, Md. Jakir Hossain, Md. Mijanur Rahaman, Burhan Uddin, Rajib Saha, Rumana Parvin, Mosammat Nasrin Sultana, Munayem Ahmed, Gazi Mohammad Saiful Islam, and Abdullah Al Hossain, amongst others.

Investigating officials said the inquiry currently involves reviewing online publications, digital records, and other relevant technical evidence. Authorities are also examining documentary materials related to the published content in question.
Meanwhile, the website “Atheist in Bangladesh,” referenced in the complaint, was found inaccessible during the preparation of this report. It remains unclear whether the website has been shut down on account of legal consequences of this form of criminal complaint or as a consequence of administrative and legal enforcement action.
Analysts familiar with Bangladesh’s socio-political climate say issues involving religion often generate strong public reactions, especially when discussions occur online. They note that cases involving alleged insults to religion frequently move beyond social debate and into the legal arena.

Several hearings in the matter have already been completed, and the judicial proceedings continue when the next hearing resumes on 24 May 2026.
